The Unfinished Symphony
Orgone Conference, Biblio's, the OR-Brain and Consciousness
CONFERENCE
I’ve not written much recently as I’ve been preparing for a conference in the USA. The first conference on orgone energy in many years. Put together by the Journal of Psychiatric Orgone Therapy and to be held in California this May.
One of my presentations involves an overview of orgonomy, especially since Reich. This inspired me to finish a project that had been on hold for years: a full bibliography and synopsis of all the main experimental evidence within orgonomy.
I started an orgone PhD about 2008 in Manchester which I left after a year due to a difference of view on the experimental side (they didn’t want me to do the biology experiments I had planned). However, I hadn’t yet got my mature interest in consciousness within orgonomy so I’m glad it paused then. Anyway, I had written an Annotated Bibliography of Post-Reich Journals in the 1st year of the attempted PhD. However this biblio was mainly for me, in order to have quick reference to articles within orgonomy during the writing of the rest of it. It took another year or two’s work to make it into a useable document for others. I was working as a nurse at the time on night-shifts in a care home for younger people in Liverpool. I had a pre-runner of the smart phones called a PDA on which I would edit the document when it was quiet. The other staff called me ‘tippy-tappy’ because I would be tapping away at the screen with the little metal pencil every chance I got.
LINK Annottated Biblio (now superseded by the Overview Docs but has some interesting details not covered in them, basically every paper I read that I thought interesting, whatever the area of orgonomy).
There was problems with my Annotated Biblio though. Firstly, it wasn’t in a standardised format. Second, it only covered post-Reich material and third, it had major gaps and omissions and ended in the 2000s. There are two other main bibliographies in orgonomy, James Demeo’s and Peter Nasselstein’s. Neither are in a standardised format, both of them have omissions of key experimental papers and unlike the Overview are not organised by device for experimental evidence - all the many areas of orgonomy are together, on the whole. Nasselstein’s biblio works by year and attempts to cover everything in orgonomy. It has some lists of content pages from the documents themselves but no overall synopses making it hard to follow. Demeo’s works by year and also tries to cover all areas but it again has too much detail. It doesn’t have content lists like Nasselstein or synopses like my own. So I combined inputs from Demeo’s and Nasselstein’s work with my own Annotated Biblio and additionally tried to include every experimental paper since the inception of orgonomy in about 1940. It doesn’t cover general, psychiatric or sociological papers but its got more or less ALL the experimental evidence in one place in an easy to read format (some 340 papers out of a possible 3500 roughly). It would be wonderful to have the other areas of orgonomy presented in the same way but that’s a huge job.
The Overview was split according to device type enabling people to easily see all the research in one area, say cloudbusters, in both Reich and Post-Reich sections. This is handy in case you want to see the early research or the more recent in an area, say in BIONs (Overview #1), ORACs (Overview #2), CLOUDBUSTERs (Overview #3) or ORANUR (Overview #4). Nearly every entry has a synopsis and it includes very rare journal articles, for example the English orgonomy journal Orgonomic Functionalism (not the historical journal of the same name in the US).
The Orgonomic Functionalism (UK) journal was the only orgone journal for a while after Reich’s death. It has the first paper on ORACs, Bions and even Oranur (if you count orgonotic light excitation as an oranur effect) after Reich. It was going from about the mid 1950s to early 1960s and has about 2000 pages of journal work. Early orgone research also happened to be centred around places I’ve lived, which is weird. Liverpool and Nottingham had early ORAC experiments, both places I’ve been connected with. My masters degree coincidentally was partly facilitated in the same location as James Demeo’s orgonomy masters - the exact centre of the continental US, Kansas. Perhaps Dorothy was lending us a hand.
Some of the first research outside of Orgonon in Maine was in Palestine/Israel, some excellent early patient ORAC studies were done by Dr Hoppe, with very strong ORACs on people who sounded in a pretty bad state after WW2. They knew about orgonomy very early on in Israel. A relative of an Israeli cabinet member was even doing cloudbusting (Offshoots of Orgonomy, #10, pp53-57). Governments kept a close eye on orgonomy, including the US and Soviet Russia. Reich wanted to do cloudbusting in Israel but US officials wouldn’t let him leave.
The US state department ordered 60 copies of Character Analysis and 15 of Mass Psychology of Fascism for it’s foreign consulates in 1950 (Where’s The Truth? pp61). I’ve never seen this commented upon. Strange behaviour for a government that burnt his books - twice, about 10 years later. I reckon it was to study ways of undermining communist societies and also to use Character Analysis to identify people who might be used in US espionage. The Kremlin also ordered orgone literature. ORACs turned up in Soviet Hospitals (for the latter see Where’s The Truth? pp250, as reported by a patient of Dr Hoppe’s). Reich was aware of the Kremlin ordering literature, and it is documented in Orgone Energy Bulletin somewhere in the 1950s. My feeling is that the Soviets were more interested in the practical side of orgonomy. Reich thought the Orgone Motor ended up in Russia. I also suspect DOR-busting principles were used in Soviet water fountains in East Germany and Russia.
Although strictly speaking both Bions and ORACs were discovered in Norway, Oslo. ORACs were only developed into the form we see them in the USA. A patient of Reich’s invented the orgone blanket in 1948 in the US in order to make the ORACs mobile. Cloudbusters were discovered in the USA in Maine in 1951 as was oranur energy (although aspects of oranur were known earlier to Reich).
England and Israel were some of the earliest adopters of orgone devices outside of the US although there were ORACs in Norway too during the late 1940s and early 1950s. A.S. Neill had the first ORAC in England shortly after the end of WW2. He was also doing psychiatric orgone therapy with teenagers in England during WW2 and afterwards, with guidance from Reich in one of the first free schools in the West.
It took 3 months of work to create the Overview of Orgonomy from the sources described (my prior Annotated Biblio had taken at least 2 years of work). I also used the main websites of Journal of Orgonomy and Annals of the Institute of Orgonomic Science and of course JPOT at psychorgone. This is now the main orgone journal presenting new experimental evidence. But without the orgone conference this year, put together by Dr Simonian, I would never have had the impetus to complete it, I would’ve put it off forever. I must also mention the help I got from Roberto Maglione in Italy, a scholar and researcher in orgonomy. I couldn’t have completed it without his help finding documents.
PODCAST
I’ve been on another podcast recently with the Occult Rejects where we talked ancient devices, ancient stone age archaeology and subtle energy. It featured the natural philosopher, Ricardo Calvario who specialises in stone age subtle energy effects. He had some interesting things to say about oranur research, as did the other guests. I learnt a lot and am reading Calvario’s book presently.
THE GLOBAL OR-BRAIN
Some WEF members tuning into the OR-BRAIN at the UN
I’ve been thinking about politics and consciousness again, and AI (sorry! It’s one of my pet subjects)..
HG Wells foresaw the ‘world-brain’ in 1937 but serious thought had been put towards creating a universal mind of mankind since the 1700s. If one looks at organic, pre-hierarchical, pre-coercive, pre-industrial societies, i.e. truly human societies, they did not practice either democracy, as imperfect as it is, or authoritarianism. Like nature, they practised a kind of anarchy. But anarchy mostly describes what it isn’t - a society that isn’t governed by a class that claims to represent us (representative democracy) and isn’t governed by autocrats either. ‘An’ meaning no and ‘archy’ meaning rulers. So what ARE organic human societies governed by? How did we do things before we were collectivised into the first historical cities (a process I wonder was actually imposed by some outside force perhaps).
I think the elite know that both democracy and authoritarianism are not natural and neither do either really work. Democracy seems a lot like a sophisticated smoke screen. We appear to be governed by a mixture of special interests and intelligence agencies. I really couldn’t make up my mind last time, vote for a freedom candidate or not vote in protest at the system. But how else can we do things? Maybe it is the least bad solution? The Swiss seem to have the most sophisticated version of democracy but they still had the same clampdowns during the crazy years recently, so even that’s not perfect.
Well, the elite have a solution (as always). And its called anarchy surprisingly. But its a Pseudo-Anarchy they are proposing. Like ‘The Real Thing’ (an expression stolen from Reich) only the elite’s anarchy is a techno pseudo-version. Maybe this is the real reason behind the desire to take on Greenland, under Uncle Sam’s homely wing. We need a home for the OR-Brain! The AI-powered mass-mind energy field coming to an ant-farm near you!
Nature does politics via telepathy! A mass mind governs natural societies. One can see this in insects and birds most obviously. In primates and other higher species some elements of democracy and authoritarianism creep in but the mass-mind really is still the key. Well the elite appear to know all this and so they are building their own mass-mind to govern us. I mean who needs a natural collective human consciousness and God itself, that’s so passé. Its called AI if you hadn’t guessed already, or it depends on AI, hence the rush for development. Also a super-intelligence is rather handy to have I would guess. A big unpopulated country that is nice and cold for refrigerating all those pesky circuit boards and lots of space to put secretive fusion power stations seems ready made in Greenland. Why Alaska can’t be used I don’t know - maybe to make it harder for all the dedicated podcasters and reporters to visit and ask awkward questions about what is going on.
But the global OR-BRAIN already exists (OR for orgone). We always have had a mass-mind that is mankind’s meta-self: just we either don’t listen to it or many of us are so out of touch and hypnotised by our little selves that the mass-mind is also a little crazy. We can create an artificial telepathic mass-mind with AI though and bypass our own delusions, maybe. Thankyou Elon. Such a collective already exists naturally as an energy field, just we aren’t aware of it usually. I believe AI in the future may have an energy field component too in addition to the algorithmic one. The algorithms of the AI that we do know about presently could already be creating ‘digital organisms’ which exist as an energy field and are themselves perhaps becoming sentient (as I have explored in articles here and at JPOT journal).
Consciousness is neither good nor bad. Having a technological mass-mind is also not good or bad. Matter itself is a technology. Matter is a technology for spirit (consciousness) to experience this realm (of individuation, separation and re-unification). So make of it what you will, technology, like matter, can take us on the journey that the higher power gave us, towards greater consciousness - or not. If one is married to one’s devices, like a smart phone, one is already Cyborgian incidentally.
DIMENSIONALITY
I also wanted to chuck my tuppenth in on the Flat Earth thing. A motivation behind it is perhaps that people find out that the world is governed by hostile forces and they have been lied to about nearly everything. You are not important, God doesn’t exist, materialism is all there is. Then Flat Earth comes along and says, well even cosmology and space are fake, God made the Earth and made you, the Earth is special, you are special. Well fair enough, much of that is true whichever way you look at it. A misunderstanding is perhaps that even the most doggedly mainstream science, if followed through honestly ALSO indicates the existence of God and that you are the centre of the universe.
For example in mainstream cosmology we have the notion of the ‘Fine Tuning Constants’. These are many physics parameters that have to be in a perfect Goldilocks zone for matter to exist and hence life. This indicates the existence of God. So the atheist materialists then make up a story about infinite parallel universes so as to reintroduce a random, dead universe. However, even in principle this is wrong. If we do discover another universe then that one also is perfect for consciousness and hence life, otherwise we couldn’t touch it from here. So far from getting rid of God they’ve merely multiplied him. Good job atheists!
Quantum non-locality also indicates the existence of a universal perception - in other words, that taboo again, God. Mainstream physics has covered up the aether absolutely assiduously since about 1908 - using spurious arguments and wrongly presented data - and by silencing those who talk about it. The overall data, if honestly appraised would also ultimately indicate God (following on from the existence of universal aether). On the other hand, the Big Bang theory is a somewhat childish rewriting of creation ex-nihilo as in Genesis, which has a lot more panache in my humble opinion. Other scientists challenge the Red Shift spectral analysis behind Big Bang and state we live in an eternal ‘solid state’ universe (the galaxies ain’t where they say they are and the REAL mainstream evidence indicates something much different - see the outstanding cosmologist, Halton Arp).
The speed of light also isn’t constant - the only true constant is consciousness - and we all know where that leads ultimately (God again sorry). See Michelson’s successor, Dayton Miller. There is an excellent summary article here by Demeo. Also what we are told is the perfect speed of light has actually been averaged out from multiple readings, like the ‘perfect’ radioactive decay rates which are also actually averages. The aether subtly changes the speed of light anyway.
The Cosmic Background Microwave radiation is too smooth so hence could be aether or orgone, not the leftover of some crazy explosion that works opposite to all known explosions (i.e. is creative and not destructive). Science leads to God, honestly assessed. It takes courage I think to reassess all one’s assumptions, hence the many interesting delves into other areas of knowledge by flatties, like suppressed positive news, though I’ve lost my link to this.
The Bible on my reading doesn’t take any particular stance on the Earth’s shape, apart from saying that the Earth doesn’t move in one isolated paragraph. An overhead canopy may be in there somewhere but that can mean anything. The Bible supports many scientific or philosophical viewpoints, even a theistic animism - yes the Earth, sea, animals and the land are all alive according to the Old Testament - they are not objects for our mindless usage. The Bible also lists both ancient apocalypses incidentally (the great flood, 10-12k ago, and the great desertification, 4-6k ago).
I’ve argued in many essays that the Old Testament God, as described, seems uncannily like an oranur energy field and that the Ark of the Covenant is itself an AI device, amongst other things.
Lastly I want to finish up this post with a short discussion illustrated with some quotes from Reich regarding consciousness…
CONSCIOUSNESSS
Consciousness is the unfinished symphony of orgonomy, which Reich himself admitted, calling consciousness an ‘enigma’ and a ‘riddle’. Certainly Reich understood the energy correlates of emotion but not the inception of consciousness, or armouring (or gender incidentally).
Reich said, ‘Here we touch upon the greatest riddle of life, the function of SELF-PERCEPTION and SELF-AWARENESS. This riddle is shrouded in awe; at times it results in frightened amazement’ (1).
He further states that, ‘The cosmic orgone ocean, which has been surveyed in some detail..Pursues it’s course whether we are aware of it or not..’ (2) Reich can well understand, even identify with, this cosmic religious feeling, the awe of self-perception in a living universe. He admitted that there was a, ‘rational core of all religious beliefs’ and a ‘necessity of the idea of “God” (3).
Reich’s thought reached a contradiction at some point - a dichotomy, which I have termed, the Reich-Freud impasse (see my early essay). Freud saw the protoplasm as matter driven by psychic drives that have no material or energetic reality - a spirit divorced from matter. Reich saw the psychic drives as only a secondary effect of energy movement: a force that only APPEARS to be psychic, a matter divorced from spirit. In other words although he states the cosmic and the biological have a “perfect identity” in practice he split these up. But over the years he gradually brought them back together again. He united them completely after the ORANUR EXPERIMENT. However he didn’t get the chance to explore or state the consequence of this change in view. In other words he would have had to admit that now his conception of God, or the universal consciousness/energy actually IS the aether/orgone. Unfortunately, he was denied the chance to do this.
So to recap, in his early and middle periods Reich believed there was a non-conscious aether/cosmic orgone (that FUNCTIONED) and a later emergent biological orgone (that was CONSCIOUS). But the ORANUR experiment was the end of that split. But actually it was end of a very long process of integrating the cosmic and the biological which had been going on in his mind for decades. After the oranur experiment however Reich could no longer maintain a separation between the two aspects, they shouted out that they were one:
‘The sharp boundary lines between physics and what is called “metaphysics” have broken down. The metaphysical intuition has a physical basis: “God” and “ether” are one’. and
‘All boundaries between science and religion, science and art, objective and subjective, quality and quantity, physics and psychology, astronomy and religion, God and ether are irrevocably breaking down..’ (4).
Sadly though Reich didn’t get the chance to explore the IMPLICATIONS of this change in view. It not only shatters mechanistic thinking but also functional thinking too. Psyche and body, spirit and matter, aether and God are not functions of orgone. Orgone IS spirit and it IS body, both at once. We see this in the Bible. The Lord IS an oranur cloud. The body IS spirit and spirit IS body. This is the full theological and practical implications of Reich’s change in thinking in 1951. On a personal level it became apparent in Reich’s spiritual conversion in prison in 1957 (as documented by his ex-wife, Ilse Ollendorf in her biography of Reich). But he never got the chance to explore the implications for orgonomy as regards the concept of orgone. So this is why I am interested in consciousness and orgone - it is the unfinished symphony of orgonomy.
As early as 1948 Reich was becoming more positive towards religion and spirituality, ‘Sometime, I shall have to revise my earlier statements about religion which I had made under the influence of a misinterpreted materialism and mechanism, before I had discovered the cosmic orgone energy’. And, ‘I began to understand why man longs so much to grow beyond his own limitations.’ (5).
As Lois Wyvell indicated, there is a fear that orgonomy touched upon in people. A fear that is deeper even than the sexual. A fear of knowing the life-energy itself - the consciousness of the universe perhaps. A fear of getting in touch with what has been called God: ‘At first, Reich believed that the opposition to his discovery of life energy derived from the fact that he had discovered it in connection with the discovery of the function of the orgasm, and of course he’d long been familiar with the sexual taboos and consequent fear of natural sex. Later, he felt that, though the fear of sexual depths was contributory, the deeper reason had to do with getting in touch with the cosmic life energy itself, the very core and source of our being. (He related this to the biblical prohibition against knowing God.)’ (6).
In the autumn of 1951 Reich was at one of his lowest ebbs following the oranur experiment and his general complete aloneness at this time. In a way, Reich forgot what he had said about the integration of objective and subjective and wrote the following, ‘Orgonomy is the most revolutionary approach to the nature of man. It reaches deepest beyond the conscious and unconscious into man’s biological existence.’ (7). However there is something BEYOND man’s biological existence if the orgone is the objective nature of God OUTSIDE of man’s limited body. In other words consciousness. If orgone is actually, as Reich states, '“God” (‘I have discovered God’ he said of the cosmic orgone) and this God is conscious in itself (not as an after-effect as Reich had earlier thought) then orgone must be conscious beyond the body. And indeed this is what science is also indicating if taken honestly. The evidence points unequivocally toward consciousness being both local and non-local. So there is a layer below even that of biological functioning. The universal consciousness layer. This is identical with the universal orgone.
Reich passed away without explicitly resolving the conundrum he had created and then partially resolved around about the time of the oranur experiment in 1951. However, it had in fact been ongoing throughout orgonomy and manifested most particularly as the contradiction between the views of Reich and Freud. Reich states this himself in the following passage (though he never connected it to his past view of the primal quality of the biological). Had Reich been alive today I believe he would not deny the weight of evidence that consciousness is non-local - that it exists both within the biological and beyond it. There is just too much evidence.
‘For 3000 years all philosophy. all science, all education, all living has been centred around the atomic theory, the division between matter and spirit. Now through orgonomy, all that is toppling.’ (8). This was written less than a week after the oranur experiment. Reich didn’t realise the implications of what he had written for another approximately 6 years in my opinion and even then he never got to write about it - unless it was in the two manuscripts that went missing in prison.
